Google Adsense

Introduction to Google AdSense

Once you’ve got a website, it’s time to make some money with it, right? Placing your website into an ad network can be one way to make this happen. The Google AdSense platform enables you to create and place ads on your website, right where you want them.

Sound simple? Well…it does have a basic concept of signing up with Google, designating the parameters of the ads you want and then inserting the code right where you want the ads to appear. That much is doable by virtually any website owner. Once you’ve got the basics accomplished, you can concentrate on really making it work for you.

Read on…we’ll get you going with Google AdSense to position you to start bringing in money from your website.

Basic Set Up

This is where you start with Google Adsense to begin placing ads on your website:

  • Visit Google AdSense and create a free account (contact information and Social Security Number required for tax purposes)
  • Browse the various settings and choices for creating ads — choose the color scheme of the ad, the size and even the content of the ad
  • Grab the code for the ad you created (cut and paste from Google)
  • Insert the code into your website where you want the ad to appear
  • Keep the great content coming to give your ads a high-quality environment

A Little Background

We’re going to back up a moment to first understand where Google AdSense ads come from. One flip side of AdSense is AdWords. If you’ve got a product, service or website to promote, you might use AdWords to drive traffic to your item. Once you create your ad, it can enter into the AdSense network for display on websites just like yours.
  • You earn a percentage of every impression and every click of every ad displaying on your website
  • Once your earnings top out at $100, Google pays you at the end of that month
Educate Yourself

Explore the Google website to learn as much as you can about AdSense. Google has a section designed to Adsense . Read enough to get yourself familiar with the entire concept.

Setting Up An Ad

Let’s walk through the process of setting up an ad. Sign into your AdSense account, select “My Ads” and then select “New Ad Unit.”
  • Design your ad — create a name for it and choose a size that will fit attractively into the spot you have in mind for it
  • Choose the ad type — text and media ads will give you the most options
  • Choose the fonts and colors for your ad — Google also offers default settings that always work, if you’re not sure about this aspect yet
  • Google offers custom channels for grouping and tracking ads — skip this for now
  • Google offers backup ads if a targeted ad isn’t available
  • Save your ad and Google will give you the code

Placing Your Ad
Once you’ve got the code, it’s time to insert it into your website. Not sure where to put it? Google has a few suggestions .
  • Google allows up to three AdSense content ads on a home page
  • Place ads immediately below content on the home page
  • Place three ads on a category page — as leaderboards, square units and vertical units in a sidebar
  • Place three ads on a content page — as square units, vertical units and banners along the bottom
That’s it for getting started with AdSense. Once you’ve got your ads created and the code blocks inserted into your website where you want them, it’s time to get busy adding relevant and useful content that will pull readers in. Obviously, we’ve covered the most basic aspects of AdSense. There is more to learn about optimization and monitoring, but that will come later.
